PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Independence Blue Cross will pay $22.5 million to settle allegations of “inaccurate and untruthful” Medicare claims.
Federal prosecutors accused the insurance company of trying to inflate its profits by submitting patient diagnosis codes that health records did not support.
IBX said it “chose to resolve the matter to avoid the delay, uncertainty, expense, and distraction” of a long court case. The Philadelphia company argues the matter “involved differing views regarding certain documentation.”
The whistleblower who reported their now-former employer to the feds will get nearly $4 million as part of the settlement.
