PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There is something special about a New Year's resolution that gives us hope for change. The symbolism of a new year and a new start lends itself to people making lifestyle changes.

It only takes a few weeks on a diet to realize that losing weight and maintaining a healthy diet is hard. It not only takes discipline, but you also have to be a smart shopper to find the foods you need.

The reality is, a good diet should be a lifetime goal — not a months-long fad. In fact, more than 80% of people who lose a great deal of weight put it back on in five years.

If you have started a diet and failed, you don't have to wait for the end of 2024 to start again. Your body doesn't care whether you start eating healthier in January or June.
