PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The head of Philadelphia’s Building Trades Council is blasting one of the candidates running in the mayoral primary, saying he lied during a debate Tuesday.
Jeff Brown has gotten endorsements from the Teamsters, grocery workers and blue-collar city employees, but he claimed Tuesday that he didn’t even want endorsements from the Building Trades Council, which includes 50 unions.
“I thought I was in an alternative universe,” said Building Trades Council leader Ryan Boyer while listening to Brown.
Boyer says Brown did seek the council’s endorsement at a forum on February 1.
“There were 25 people in the room when he came to pine for our endorsement, so to say that he didn’t seek it, it’s a bold-faced lie.”
The Teacher’s Union says Brown also sought its endorsement at a forum in January and produced an email from Brown, thanking the union for keeping him updated on its deliberations.
But Brown suggested the Building Trades, who endorsed Cherelle Parker, and the Teachers Union, who endorsed Helen Gym, don’t represent working people.
Boyer called on Gov. Shapiro to remove Brown as chairman of Pennsylvania’s Workforce Development Board, as well as replace him on the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
In response, Brown did not address why he said he didn’t want the unions’ endorsements, even though he asked for them. He simply said he’s proud of his service and looks forward to continuing to serve on the state board.
