Jefferson Abington Hospital introduces new Safe Center

Dr. Bruce Rubin with the Center says it addresses a growing need that emergency rooms aren’t designed for

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Jefferson Abington Hospital in Jenkintown is introducing a new state-of-the-art safe space for crime victims.

The hospital’s Forensic Nursing Program is growing, from assisting victims of sexual abuse to helping survivors of all types of crime at their new Safe Center for Crime Victims. Dr. Bruce Rubin with the Center says they are addressing a growing need that emergency rooms aren’t designed for.

“In the last couple of years the need has increased a lot,” he said. “The emergency department is organized chaos but chaos nonetheless, it’s not ideal for victims of sexual abuse or crimes.”

Jalla Atkins, who runs the Safe Center, says her team specializes in training with sexual assault. She has assured her nurses have been provided ample training on such cases.

Atkins says the center came to fruition because of the need from the surrounding communities.

“This whole process is made possible because of our community being so generous and our existing community partners here, we have the victim service center of Montgomery County,” she said.

The center allows the forensics nurses to deliver much-needed compassionate, comprehensive, expert forensic care in a safe, trusting environment, she said. The center also treats child abuse cases, human trafficking, elder abuse, and victims suffering from cognitive delays.

Among the features of the new Safe Center – a private and secure exam suite, private interview rooms, and a secured evidence collection area.
