PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Jim’s Steaks on South Street will reopen next month after a devastating fire forced its doors shut nearly two years ago.
On July 29, 2022, a two-alarm fire broke out in the kitchen. Firefighters spent about five hours trying to put it out.
Officials say the cause was faulty electrical wiring.
Crews have spent the last two years reconstructing the building, which dates back to the late 1800s.
An eye-opening experience
Ken Silver, Jim’s president, says the new space will be bigger and better, as they bought Eye’s Gallery, the colorful storefront next door.
He says the newly added space will allow seating for an additional 60 customers.
And while you’re grabbing a bite, you can enjoy the artwork of Philadelphia-based artist, Isaiah Zagar, creator of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, as several of his restored and preserved mosaics will be on display.
“The transformation of the space is incredible to behold and will endure as one of our proudest endeavors,” Silver said.
Although there are new additions, some traditions will remain.
Silver says the staff will be the same, the restaurant will still be cash-only, and it will continue to be a late-night staple on South Street, staying open until 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 1 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays.
The official reopening is scheduled for May 1 at 4 p.m.
“We're almost there and can't wait to welcome you back! You won't believe the incredible transformation of our building (now two buildings) but we're sure you'll enjoy the same great sandwiches as always.”
