PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s post-football career took him to the School District of Philadelphia on Wednesday, where he promoted his AI content creation app for schools.
Students at at least three district schools are using Kaepernick's subscription-based app called Lumi, which helps them create illustrated stories. They describe their characters to a chatbot and the app generates images to tell the story in comics form. Speaking at district headquarters, Kaepernick said AI can help students to develop their creativity.
“When we think about the future that we're preparing them for, having AI-ready skills is part of that,” he said.
Emily Thomas, a teacher at Farrell Elementary, has used the app in her sixth-grade English class. "The best thing about this program is,” she said, “it’s showing students that AI isn’t as smart as they think that it is."
She explained it can develop students’ critical thinking skills, because they need to enter a precise description to tell the story they had in mind.
“They have to really go back and work on their wording, the details. They have to think things through,” she said, adding it’s a great way to show students that AI has limits.
“What actually my students have discovered is how dumb it really is, that it’s not doing anything unless you’re telling it exactly what you want it to do.”
