PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's that time of year again: "kitten season." Communities in the Philadelphia area are overflowing with kittens.
"It's neighbors helping neighbors. These are community cats," said Tanya, a Germantown resident. She said the number of feral cats can balloon exponentially this time of year.
"We're overpopulated right now, especially with kittening season. All the shelter organizations, nonprofit 501(c)(3)s need foster parents to step forward," she said.
Hannah Stember, with Best Friends Animal Society, suggests adopting or fostering a new furry friend. "Across America, in shelters, cats are actually the most at-risk pets. They account for 69% of animals killed in shelters," she indicated.
Another solution, Tanya advised, is that people look into area organizations already doing the work to humanely curb the exploding cat population. She mentioned Brenda's Cat Rescue in Roxborough.
"There are orgs that I help out too, that go out and ... trap, neuter and release, where they are released back into their communities," she said.
Stember, meanwhile, said fostering is a win-win situation for everyone, as it allows people to help out while feeling out whether they are up to the commitment of adopting.
