PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — With a handful of weeks left until Election Day, the ACLU is embarking on a Know Your Rights Bus Tour to ensure that voters know their rights and have a plan to vote.
Denitra Sherman, deputy advocacy and policy director for ACLU’s Philadelphia office, said the organization is trying to do something fun to get folks energized and excited about the upcoming election.
“But while also doing that, we want to make sure that folks know their rights, know all that they need to know when it comes to going to vote at the polls, voting by mail,” she said.
Sherman said there is a lot at stake this election, and poll monitor volunteers from the ACLU will be out and about to help with any issues and questions people may have. Like for mail-in ballots, “making sure that folks fill it out completely, they sign it, they use the appropriate envelopes, and making sure that they get it back to their board of elections by the deadline.”
“We want to make sure that folks have a resource and we will be a resource if there are any issues that come up,” she added.
The tour is making several stops in major cities, and Philadelphia’s stop features a Know Your Rights game show hosted by comedian W. Kamau Bell, where he’ll challenge contestants to see how well they know their rights and test their knowledge of local trivia.
The event will take place at the Theater of the Living Arts on Sept. 17.
