KYW Medical Report: Scientists studying high antibody levels in Italian COVID-19 hotspot

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The way vaccines work is not that complicated.

A vaccine is an artificial exposure to the virus. Some have said it is like promoting the immune memory for an individual so the next time they get in contact with the virus, the response can be fast and strong.

But scientists are now investigating the COVID-19 response in a small Italian village, Vo’ Vecchio.

Vo’, located west of Venice, was hit hard by COVID-19 in the earliest days of the pandemic. Scientists say about 10 to 12 months after natural exposure to the virus, a significant percentage of the population has antibodies that are even higher than a month after exposure.

Based on this, researchers are trying to learn how to improve the vaccines we currently have and how this may provide crucial information about the disease going forward.
