KYW Medical Report: How to control high blood pressure

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The greater the role that people take in their own health care, the greater the opportunity for success. The control of high blood pressure is a great example.

High blood pressure is known as the silent killer because incredible damage can be done without warning signs. However, there is a relatively simple way to stay on top of controlling it.

The key to managing blood pressure issues is getting accurate blood pressure readings. A visit to your doctor is a great way to do this, but another tool is far more convenient: home blood pressure monitoring.

If you have a cuff at home, you should check your blood pressure in the morning and evening.

To get the most accurate reading:

• Use a correct-sized upper arm cuff;
• Empty your bladder;
• Avoid caffeine for at least 30 minutes before the reading;
• Keep your feet on the floor with legs uncrossed;
• Keep your arm at heart level;
• And, don’t talk during the reading.
