PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The COVID-19 delta variant has had an impact on discussions surrounding booster shots.
In the earliest stages of vaccine development, there was already talk about boosters. As scientists frantically worked to stem the tide of deaths in the world, they knew that a virus as aggressive as COVID-19 would mutate and eventually learn to outsmart our vaccines.
There was precedent for these concerns — every year, millions receive flu shot boosters, factoring in numerous influenza mutations. The delta strain is not the only mutation — the lambda strain is already gaining attention, and there will be more.
Experts anticipate regularly scheduled boosters, and the key to success will be efficient distribution and buy-in from the majority of the population.
Vaccines remain one of our most valuable weapons against disease.
