KYW Medical Report: How to safely play sports amid COVID-19

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Playing sports is a great way for children to burn energy and learn life lessons. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has put a damper on many sporting activities.

The risk of acquiring COVID-19 through recreational sports depends on the type of activity. Lower-risk activities include skill-building drills, either alone or with family. The risk increases with team-based practices, and even more so with competitions where members of the community are present.

So what is safest? The CDC recommends outdoor recreational sports rather than indoor ones, if possible. If you feel sick, stay home.

The CDC also suggests being in smaller team sizes, avoiding physical contact, spacing out players, wearing masks, minimizing shared equipment, and washing hands.
