KYW Medical Report: Overcoming loneliness in a pandemic

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Loneliness is a major health issue among the elderly, but since the start of the pandemic, the issue has been impacting people of all ages.

People are definitely getting out and about more than in the earlier months of the pandemic, but there are still many who are dramatically limiting social encounters in an effort to reduce their exposure to COVID-19.

As the country ramps up vaccinations, the hope is that things will continue to improve, but loneliness continues to be a key health issue.

Psychiatrists and psychologists recommend certain lifestyle changes that can help, like getting a pet and increasing efforts to join groups, even if the groups meet virtually.

A great idea is to make an effort to reconnect with family members who have been vaccinated, as well as encourage those who are hesitant to consider the vaccines now that they are widely available.

Finally, focus on the present. Don’t put things off, just try to live in the moment.
