KYW Medical Report: Our pandemic response is the same 100 years later

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Our national response to COVID-19 and scientific recommendations is nothing new.

COVID-19 stands as a stark reminder that we are all vulnerable. Even with the intense efforts of our best and brightest, we are all in a precarious balance between health and illness.

COVID-19 has also thrown us back in time because we haven’t had this kind of challenge in 100 years. But notably, our response hasn’t changed since then.

During the time of the Spanish flu, masks and avoidance of large groups were recommended. There were no vaccines.

There were also people in denial who traveled town to town with unproven cures and great sales pitches. There were those who used the pandemic for personal gain.

Science is just a reflection of human growth and development. Pandemics are a part of our human experience, but how we respond ultimately determines how many people have to suffer.
