PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Once someone is diagnosed with diabetes, it is crucial that they know how and why to control their blood sugar. Unfortunately, not all receive the information equally.
Racial and ethnic disparities in health care have recently become a front-and-center issue, but many physicians and other health care leaders have long known about the issue and have been working hard to make changes.
Almost 10 years ago, the National Health Interview Survey was designed to look at diabetes and what groups were and were not given advice about preventive care and treatment. A new report found Hispanic diabetic patients were far less likely to receive this education than Black or white patients.
According to the report, the early understanding of and treatment for diabetes can prevent heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and neurologic issues.
