PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A couple of decades ago, cholesterol levels were a major topic of conversation, but that’s not the case nowadays.
In those years, the American Heart Association and the government went on a massive campaign telling Americans how high cholesterol was linked to heart disease. We were told to avoid fatty beef, dairy products and saturated fats when possible.
All of this remains true, but a new report finds that for certain groups of people — especially in underserved areas — we are still losing the battle with cholesterol.
Medications to help the problem, including a group of drugs called statins, are not being taken when they could help.
This is a case where we may once again need more talk — and most importantly, more action.
