KYW Medical Report: The health care shortage is staggering

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As more doctors, nurses and other health care professionals leave the workplace, the pressure of the shortage is being felt by both patients and remaining workers.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, almost 550,000 health care workers have left their jobs. In September alone, the number was almost 18,000.

While some have contracted COVID-19, the majority are leaving for other reasons, including burnout after months of working on the front lines and caring for the seriously ill.

The American health care system was already strained prior to the pandemic, but shortages are adding to the stress on the professionals who remain.

On the positive side, there are initiatives to help grow the workforce as well as provide necessary mental health support to help those dealing with stress.
