KYW Medical Report: The truth about growing pains

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Parents have been telling their children about growing pains for generations, but do kids really get them?

As a little child, do you remember complaining about your leg hurting and your parents saying something like “that’s just a growing pain”? It is estimated that 10% to 20% of children experience these pains.

The truth is that these pains have nothing to do with growing and have everything to do with playing and exercising throughout the day, which many kids do a great deal.

The good news is growing pains are harmless. They usually happen in the legs and at the end of the day— and after a lot of play.

Of course, if your child is having unusual pain and you are worried, never hesitate to call your doctor.
