PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Here’s some not-so-sweet advice: If you want to make a dietary change that will have the greatest impact on your life, consider cutting back on sugar.
According to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, the average American consumes more than 17 teaspoons of added sugar every day. The recommendation is 12.
The impact can be great: Too much sugar can lead to increases in blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, a buildup of fat around vital organs, and colorectal cancer.
The unfortunate truth is that much of the sugar we consume is hidden in packaged and processed food.
Some tips: Drink more water and less soda and fruit drinks, watch your portions and read the labels. The key is cutting back.
