KYW Medical Report: Understanding the uncertainty of long COVID-19

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Tens of thousands of Americans are battling long COVID-19, and the impact can be far greater than just physical damage.

Long COVID-19 describes the chronic health issues that can occur in people after they have had a bout with COVID-19. A significant number of these people are young and have few, if any, pre-existing conditions.

In fact, a very large number may have tested positive but don't even remember having the virus.

The physical impact on the heart, lungs and nervous system are well-documented, but one of the biggest issues is uncertainty. Due to the newness and unpredictable nature of the virus, many with long COVID-19 have no idea how long problems will last — or if they will ever go away.

Researchers and clinicians are working hard to find the answer, but there is agreement that the best protection is avoiding the virus in the first place.
