PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Scientists are learning more about COVID-19 mutations amid concerns about them.

There is growing concern regarding COVID-19 mutations, and scientists suggest that emerging variants may become resistant to COVID-19 treatments, including the very important monoclonal antibodies.

The prevalent strains in the U.S. appear to remain sensitive to therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. At this point, recent detailed study raises the concern that the virus could be only a few mutations away from more substantive resistance.

The good news is that the present vaccines are still quite effective, but there is agreement that over time, we will need booster shots to account for mutations.

Scientists are calling for a systematic global approach to COVID-19 surveillance, tracking, and vaccine distribution, as well as continued studies of present and emerging COVID-19 treatment.
