PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Businessman and longtime philanthropist Leonard Abramson has died at 93.

Jonathan Epstein, dean of the University of Pennsylvania's Pearlman School of Medicine, confirmed he died on July 4.


Abramson notably founded U.S. Healthcare, one of the first health maintenance organizations, in 1975. The company was bought by Aetna 20 years later and is now part of CVS Health.

He and his late wife Madlyn gave over $140 million to cancer research at Penn Medicine. The hospital's cancer center was named after the couple.
