PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Camden County Parks Department has received a $19 million grant to further develop the LINK Trail which will be part of the Circuit Trails, one of America’s largest trail networks.

“This is about reinvesting in a community and creating new connections and new opportunities,” said Justin Dennis with the Circuit Trails Coalition.
Once completed, the link will connect nine counties in Pennsylvania and South Jersey to more than 850 miles of interconnected multi-use trails, where anyone can walk, bike and connect with nature.

The counties are:
– Bucks
– Chester
– Delaware
– Montgomery
– Philadelphia
– Burlington
– Camden
– Gloucester
– Mercer

“This trail is going to mean a lot to not just the city of Camden, but throughout the region, just engaging with bikes going up and down throughout different communities and calming down here on our waterfront,” said Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen.

The LINK Trail will travel through 17 Camden County communities from the Ben Franklin Bridge in Camden to the Pinelands National Reserve in Winslow Township. Rails to Trails Conservancy representative Anya Saretzky says communities are healthier and happier when trail networks are central to their design.

“And we believe that this infrastructure has the power to transform communities and create joyful, vibrant public spaces that are equitable and inclusive.”

The trail is expected to be completed in five years. Funds come from the U.S. Department of Transportation Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant program.
