PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — “Abbott Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter is bringing her standup comedy to Philadelphia this week. The actress says fans of the hit sitcom will be happy to learn there isn't much difference between her and the tough, South Philly teacher she plays.
Over her 30-year career, Walter has shared the screen with household names like Lindsay Lohan, Jim Carrey and Tom Cruise.
But as one of the stars of the award-winning hit sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” Walter can't believe she's become one herself.
"I mean, Melissa Schemmenti is that household name … If I'm out somewhere and I hear Lisa Ann Walter, I turn around like, 'Did I go to high school with you?'"
Walter says Philly fans of the show likely have an idea of what to expect from her stand-up.
"I think, you know, my stage persona is different than if you meet me at a grocery store, you know, I'm a mom of four. I talk about a lot of that stuff on stage, and what's happening in the world and everything, but I think it's like, kind of the attitude that I have as Melissa is closer to my stage persona than anything I've ever done," Walter said.
Walter says she put a lot of effort and research into her role because she “wanted to honor the people” and “get as close as possible." So, when people tell her she’s “just like her character,” she gratefully accepts it.
Walter will be at the Helium Comedy Club in Rittenhouse from July 11 through 13. Tickets are available here.
