Machine breakdown led to delay in Philadelphia election results

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It was a quiet election day with light turnout in Philadelphia, but there were a couple of hiccups.

The city commissioners had high hopes for the million-dollar machines they bought last year, with a grant, to count mail-in ballots. However, one key piece of equipment broke down early in the evening: The extractor that pulls the ballot out of its envelope.

That slowed down the process, but they soldiered on, just as they did in the morning when no-show volunteers caused some polling places to open late.

The only significant case in election court, according to Krasner campaign attorney Adam Bonin, was a sample ballot marked for challenger Carlos Vega being distributed in a ward that had endorsed Krasner.

He says the judge ruled that, since there was no indication of who paid for the ballots, sheriffs should seize them.
