PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man accused of shooting at a Philadelphia police officer has been charged with attempted murder.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office said 19-year-old Devon Smith shot at one of two officers who responded to a domestic incident in Southwest Philadelphia Tuesday night.

Officials say Smith had his hands in his pockets when the officers got to South 56th Street, not far from Baltimore Avenue. He told police he had a gun.

When one officer tried to apprehend him, authorities say Smith fired. He missed, but the gun powder burned the officer's face.

The officer was treated and is OK.

The other officer got the gun away from Smith.

In addition to attempted murder, Smith is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault on police.

UPDATE:
In June 2023, prosecutors negotiated a plea deal with Smith, withdrawing charges of assault of law enforcement, firearms not to be carried without a license, simple assault and reckless endangerment charges, and quashed the criminal attempt charge. In exchange, Smith pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and possession of an instrument in a crime and was sentenced to four to eight years in prison, with three years probation.
