PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 23-year-old man who authorities sought in connection with a playground shooting last week has surrendered to police.

Anthony T. Smith was wanted for allegedly shooting an 18-year-old in broad daylight on April 1 at the Lonnie Young Recreation Center, located along East Chelten Avenue in East Germantown.

Police said nearly a dozen shots were fired at the teen, who remains in critical condition at the hospital.

Smith will face aggravated assault and gun charges.

The shooting came after a particularly violent weekend. It marked at least the ninth teenager shot in the city in a five-day span. The April 1 shooting happened on the same night that city officials held an emergency meeting at an East Mount Airy rec center to discuss how to respond to those youth-centered incidents.
