PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police say a man, who was in a burning row home in Kensington, fired shots at officers who responded to the scene.
At around 8 p.m. Wednesday, police arrived at the narrow block of homes on Clementine Street near Clearfield Street and saw flames coming from an abandoned property. A second-floor window and a car parked below had been hit with gunfire.
Officers then saw a man stick his hand out of a window on the second floor and fire shots at them, Capt. John Walker said.
"Shots hit the top of this unmarked police car. Fortunately the officers were not in the car. The officers were not injured," he said.
Then, police say, someone jumped out of the window onto the sidewalk. He had been shot in the chin, so he was taken to the hospital for treatment. He is expected to recover.
There are conflicting reports as to whether the person who fired the shots is the same man who jumped out of the window. Police also initially said one person was taken into custody but did not say if that was the shooter.
Police say they don't yet know what was going on in this property or how the fire started. These and more questions are all part of the investigation.
