PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA transit police arrested a man wanted for threatening a SEPTA bus driver and firing a bullet through a window of the bus last month in Feltonville.
Investigators say on July 14, just before 6 a.m., a man got on the No. 57 bus at Front and Luzerne streets in the Feltonville section of the city — and argued with the driver over the fare. The man allegedly threatened the driver before getting off the bus. He then fired a shot through the windshield. No one was physically hurt.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said the clear image of 32-year-old Heriberto Acevedo Jr. caught on a SEPTA camera, helped SEPTA Transit police find and arrest him.
“We hope this is a warning to anyone who thinks they can commit a crime on SEPTA. We are watching,” SEPTA’s CEO and General Manager Leslie Richards said Wednesday.
“We have over 30,000 cameras. It was a camera on one of our vehicles that identified this particular individual. And our SEPTA police work tirelessly as they have here.”
The district attorney’s office has charged Acevedo with a number of offenses, including aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, and three different types of violations of the uniform firearms act.
“The word is getting out that you cannot misbehave on SEPTA. You will be held accountable,” said Krasner.
“We intend to prosecute this and every other criminal matter involving violence, risks to people, serious misconduct on SEPTA.”
Acevedo has prior convictions, including a recent gun conviction in Bucks County and a drug possession conviction in Philadelphia.
Acevedo remains in jail. His bail was set at $600,000.
