PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Officials have charged a Philadelphia man they say killed a young woman in a wrong-way crash on I-95 last weekend.

44-year-old David Bonilla faces homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence charges after police say he drove south in the northbound lanes on I-95 early Sunday morning and crashed straight into 21-year-old Thaduba Turay's car, killing her.

It happened close to 3 a.m. between the Walt Whitman Bridge and Columbus Boulevard. State troopers arrived shortly after getting numerous calls about a car driving on the wrong side of the highway.

Bonilla also faces involuntary manslaughter, careless and reckless driving, among other charges. His preliminary hearing is set for next month.

He's been arraigned and bail has been set at $750,000 — of which he only needs to post 10%.

Editor's note on June 16, 2025:
In a deal with prosecutors, David Bonilla was sentenced to three to six years in prison. Bonilla pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle while DUI. The other seven charges were dropped. He was out on bail and must surrender to prison in July.
