PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police have made an arrest in the case of the shooting outside Roxborough High School last month that killed a 14-year-old football player and injured four other teens. Officials say they are close to making more arrests, and they are asking for the public's help.
Yaaseen Bivins, 21, is charged with murder, four counts of aggravated assault and related offenses for his role in the shooting on Sept. 27.
Police say there were two cars involved in the shooting. One was parked at the corner of Pechin and Gates streets for about six minutes before five gunmen jumped out and opened fire.
The shooting wounded four students between the ages of 14 and 17, and killed 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde from Havertown as he was leaving a football scrimmage at the school that day.
Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore says they recovered a receipt connecting Bivins to the purchase of ammunition found at the scene.
“Because of his status as a felon, we were able to use our federal partners and arrest him for being ineligible to purchase ammunition,” Vanore said.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding four other suspects, including 16-year-old Dayron Burney-Thorn. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office charged Burney-Thorn with murder and related offenses.
“Evidence led us to develop a warrant in early October, Oct. 4, for a Dayron Burney-Thorn — 16-year-old male,” Vanore said. “He’s still a fugitive. We are still looking for the public's help to find that individual.”
Anyone with information on Burney-Thorn’s whereabouts is asked to contact police.
“Philadelphia Police and our partners in law enforcement continue to tirelessly investigate this incident, and we ask for the public’s help in identifying the remaining suspects involved so that they can be apprehended by law enforcement and held accountable in a court of law,” said District Attorney Larry Krasner.
