PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The man shot multiple times by a federal courthouse security guard in Center City on Tuesday now faces federal attempted murder charges.

Authorities say Anthony Lombardo, 44 from Bristol, Bucks County, pulled a large kitchen knife and lunged at a security guard who approached his illegally-parked van outside the federal courthouse on Seventh Street near Market Street.

The guard said he shot Lombardo when he saw the knife, out of fear for his life. Federal officials added that Lombardo fell to the ground, dropping the knife, and started to grab another knife from inside his sleeve. Other guards raced over and tried to subdue him.

Officials said Lombardo had his arms sprawled open when guards noticed something under Lombardo’s sweatshirt. It turned out to be a hard piece of plastic, like makeshift body armor.

Authorities said that as the guards were handcuffing Lombardo, he yelled, “Let me bleed out.”

Lombardo remained in the hospital Wednesday evening, though his condition was unknown. He faces charges of attempting to murder and forcibly assault, intimidate and interfere with a federal law enforcement officer.

Federal officials said the security guard who was shot is contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service.
