PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A suspect is dead after an hours-long standoff with police in the Logan section of Philadelphia overnight. Investigators said the man shot a woman and fired his gun at officers.
It started just before 9 p.m. Sunday at a boarding house at 10th Street and Duncannon Avenue. Police said a man, later identified as 54-year-old James Harris, shot a woman with whom he was involved in a conflict earlier in the day.
When police and medics responded, Harris fired shots at them, said Inspector D.F. Pace.
“Both officers and medics then both retreated and took cover behind vehicles and other areas where they could protect themselves from that gunfire,” Pace said.
The first responders were not hit. Police fired back at Harris, and he was not hit either, police said. The SWAT team got involved, but officers had to be careful as the shooting victim was still in the house, along with three others who rent rooms there.
During the standoff, police were able to get the innocent people out of the house. The wounded woman, who had been shot in the arm, jumped out of a window.
“There were actually several officers underneath that window, still at risk of having a person potentially fire on them, attempting to help this person out of that window,” Pace said.
The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. Her condition was not immediately clear.
Police used tear gas at one point in an effort to get the man to surrender. They also used a drone, which the suspect shot down, Pace said.
The barricade situation ended around 3 a.m. when police said the shooter turned the gun on himself and died.
No officers, medics or neighbors were hurt in the standoff.
One of the officers who returned fire, Abreu-Santana has been placed on administrative duty, pending the outcome of the investigation.
