PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was killed in a hit-and-run on North Broad Street in Philadelphia early Monday morning. Police are searching for the driver.
Around 12:30 a.m., the driver of a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Buick or a Chevy, was speeding north on Broad Street and hit a pedestrian. The victim was crossing Broad Street, near Lehigh Avenue, even though he had a red light, crash investigators said.
The driver fled the scene. The SUV was recovered Monday afternoon on the 2000 block of Beach Street.
The 60-year-old victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
This was yet another fatal traffic incident on Broad Street, which is considered to be the deadliest street in Philadelphia. In 2024, the annual report of the city’s Vision Zero program stated that there was more than one traffic death a month on Broad Street — more than Roosevelt Boulevard or any other street in Philadelphia.
City officials are hoping speed cameras will make a difference in the near future. They are slated to be operational along Broad Street at some point this year.
