PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 48-year-old man is dead after being shot in the head while trying to steal a car Friday afternoon, according to police.

Officials say it happened just after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Frankford Avenue and Pratt Street near the Frankford Transportation Center — police say that's where they found the man with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition and died about three hours later.

According to surveillance footage obtained by our newsgathering partners at NBC10, the 48-year-old man was shot while behind the wheel of a gray Sedan, which then crashed into a taxi.

The taxi driver told NBC10 he saw the Sedan "zig-zagging" very fast toward him. He said he was not hurt in the crash but could tell the other driver was badly injured.

Police say 39-year-old Sherwayne Garrison approached SEPTA police at the scene and identified himself as the shooter. He was arrested and charged with murder and related offenses.
