PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is dead after a shooting near a Five Below in North Philadelphia Friday evening.
It happened around 5:30 p.m. in the Baker’s Square shopping center off Fox Street in Nicetown.
Inspector D.F. Pace said a Pennsylvania State Police Constable providing security for the shopping center was alerted by someone that a struggle was ongoing in the back of the lot on the side of the Five Below.
The constable then saw a black colored SUV and what appeared to be people inside struggling.
The constable tried to intervene, but the SUV sped off. As he got back in his car to try to follow, he saw a 25-year-old man shot multiple times on the sidewalk near where the car sped off from the shopping center.
He then called the police department, who took the man to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Pace said not long after, officers found a black Honda SUV abandoned in a cemetery off Clearfield Street — about a five-minute drive from the shopping center.
“Inside, the ignition was broken, and there was a considerable amount of blood,” Pace said.
A window was also shattered, and Pace said a lot of shattered glass was in the shopping center. The man who died was the registered owner of the SUV.
No one has been arrested, and a motive is not yet known. An investigation is underway.
