PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities are searching for a man they say escaped police custody early Saturday morning after being arrested for shoplifting in Northeast Philadelphia.
Police say just before 7 a.m., loss prevention officers at the ShopRite on Frankford Avenue detained a man after watching him steal “a large quantity of bacon.”
Officers responded to the scene and took the man into custody, placing him in the back of a police car with his hands cuffed behind his back.
It wasn’t long before officers say he rolled down the rear window, climbed out of the car and ran off.
Officers led a search using canines in the surrounding area but could not locate the suspect.
He was last seen heading behind the ShopRite towards Crestmont Avenue.
Anyone with information on this incident or the suspect’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department at 215-686-8477.
