PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hundreds of demonstrators filled the streets around City Hall Saturday morning to call on the government to provide fair and affordable housing for all.

The rally, organized by the Center for Popular Democracy as the closing event of its annual convention, drew advocates from across the country to Center City to demand more funding for fair housing. Diana Robinson rallied marchers with a megaphone.

“Everyone deserves dignity. Everyone deserves fair housing and that’s why we’re here today asking that," she told KYW Newsradio. "All these groups from across the country are asking that.”

Marsha Pool came Little Rock, Arkansas and says homelessness doesn’t need to exist anymore. “So many people are making minimum wage and above minimum wage and they’re still unable to pay their rent because of greed,” she said.

According to the nonprofit Project HOME, outreach groups engage more than 6,000 people without an address every year in Philadelphia.

However, not everyone person experiencing homelessness lives on the streets. The organization says they find shelter in cars, abandoned buildings, transit stations and other places not meant for people to live.

In March, Philadelphia announced it was getting more than $37 million in federal funding to help people experiencing homelessness. However, demonstrators at City Hall said that isn’t enough to take care of the crisis in the city.
