PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One out of 10 people will experience a seizure at some point in their lives. Some of the common causes might be surprising.
The chances of having a seizure increase as we get older. The largest number of cases is in people over 55 years old. Many people immediately associate seizures with epilepsy, but epilepsy makes up fewer cases than many may think. There are other causes — and having a seizure might be an early warning sign.
When physicians evaluate a person for causes of seizure they look at obvious factors like head trauma and concussion, but other causes such as tumors, metabolic disorders, stroke, substance abuse and medication interactions are also uncovered. For this reason, a person who experiences a seizure needs to reach out to their doctor and not ignore the issue.
