PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Aspirin has been called a wonder drug for its effectiveness in relieving pain, fever and inflammation. A new study suggests there may be another potential use.

According to a new report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, including aspirin as part of regular treatment, may help prolong the lives of women with ovarian cancer.

No one should take aspirin on a consistent basis without the advice of a physician, because chronic use is not without side effects. But researchers are in agreement that it could help in the case of ovarian cancer.

In the United States, approximately 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. Among cancers, ovarian cancer ranks fifth in number of deaths, and it has the highest death rate of cancers affecting the female reproductive system.
