Medical Report: Caregivers too often skip care for themselves

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — More than one in five Americans provides care for an adult or child with special needs. The number grew from 43 million in 2015 to 53 million in 2021.

The care that many of these people provide is selfless and ongoing, but a growing number of studies reveal that these caregivers are often denying care to themselves. What they may not realize is that denying their own care also makes them less efficient as caregivers.

According to the research, there are several key steps that caregivers need to take. The first is to be sure they get enough sleep and exercise. Another one is to be certain they keep appointments with their own doctors, as well.
