PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The holiday season can be a time of happiness and celebration with family and friends. Each year, Madison Avenue uses the concept of holiday celebrations to sell all sorts of products. Television programming features numerous stories centered around holiday themes.

But for those who compare their lives with these glorified images, it can lead to depression. Scientific studies have shown that rates of anxiety and depression rise during the holiday season, especially in those who are lonely or feel helpless.

Alcohol misuse also increases during the holidays.

If you are depressed, reach out to a friend or family member. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.
