Medical Report: Diagnosing sinus infections

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you have been suffering from a head cold or persistent post-nasal drip and cough, you are far from alone.

What is causing these symptoms, and can we attack the underlying cause? One key question is whether or not you need an antibiotic. In the vast majority of cases, you won't, because the underlying cause is a virus.

Some common symptoms that may indicate a bacterial infection are pain or pressure in the sinuses, fever, and a foul-smelling nasal discharge — especially if symptoms last more than three days.

If you have persistent symptoms, you should see your doctor to get a diagnosis.
