PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It is very important to talk with your doctor about cancer screenings. Through the use of simple tests and studies, cancer can be detected early, and much more effectively treated.
However, a disturbing report in the Journal of the American Medical Association has found that as many as two-thirds of people who have abnormal studies do not return to their doctors for a follow-up appointment. As a result, they miss a critical conversation explaining why the results are so important.
Some people might think fear and avoidance may be easier than confronting the problem. The cost of care is another major factor. Issues like food insecurity, education and employment concerns can also prevent follow-up.
The inconvenient truth is that without treatment, the problem won't go away.
