PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Pressure injuries cost U.S. health care providers more than $26 billion every year, but many could be prevented.

These pressure wounds to the skin or underlying tissue often occur over bony prominences and often first appear as an intact or open wound.

Patients in hospitals and nursing homes are often victims. Part of the problem is poor nutritional status, but many wounds can be prevented by repositioning patients and providing appropriate support surfaces throughout care.

It is important for those caring for patients to consistently look for potential pressure wounds. Positive strides are being made at hospitals and nursing facilities, but more can be done.
