PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — According to research performed at the University of California, San Francisco, and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, there is a perception that smoking marijuana is safer than smoking cigarettes.
However, marijuana can also cause lung disease as well as a wide variety of issues similar to cigarettes.
Public health officials say years of education about the negative effects of smoking cigarettes have been successful and the vast majority of people are aware of the dangers of cigarettes and chewing tobacco.
However, there needs to be more aggressive public health education regarding the risks of marijuana to combat aggressive marketing campaigns.
