Medical Report: Let the scientists worry about COVID-19 variants

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Many of the debates over COVID-19 are calming down. KYW Medical Editor Dr. Brian McDonough says things are changing.

A few months after learning about the ba.2 omicron subvariant of the virus, there is now news of ba.2.12 and ba.2.12.1 subvariants. The variants are growing 25% faster in certain parts of the country, including parts of New York. This is important, but it is not causing major debate.

Most of us know that viruses mutate all the time. Many commentators are saying: Let the scientists worry about variants.

There are a few critical facts. If you are vaccinated and boosted, you remain significantly less likely to be hospitalized and die. And masks are critical if you are at high risk or you plan to be around those who are high risk or not yet eligible to be vaccinated.
