Medical Report: Making the most of summer for our health

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Summer is around the corner, and we already have experienced several days in May with temperatures and humidity levels that felt more like August. While the weather may take us by surprise, there are some things we can do to make the most of the summer for our health.

More predictable than the weather is the onslaught of health club marketing and magazine covers promising to reveal the secret of getting into shape for the perfect summer beach or pool look. For those who are motivated, this can be a call to action.

However, many of us ignore that call, and we stumble into June still carrying the vestiges of Thanksgiving dinner around our waists. If you are in this group: Do not be discouraged.

The reality is that gradual weight loss and lifestyle changes lead to lasting results. Take advantage of the longer days and better weather and get out and exercise. If you can figure out how to exercise — even moderately — just 30 minutes a day, it will yield results and improve your overall health dramatically.
