PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Mass violent incidents often lead to PTSD in the people directly affected, but the larger community also pays a price.
A new study from the Medical University of South Carolina looked at six communities that experienced a mass violence incident (MVI), and the results clearly show members of the community have an increased rate of PTSD.
Of particular interest is that those most likely to experience PTSD had a prior incident of violence or sexual abuse in their own lives independent of the larger event. Widespread coverage of mass violent incidents can widen the scope of those impacted
