Medical Report: Don't let shame about mental illness keep you from seeking help

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There is no doubt that our society has made improvements in recognizing and understanding mental illness. However, help is still hard to find. And many people with mental illness live with guilt and shame when they should not have to.

People who experience episodes of mania — during which a person may act erratically because of a feeling of uncontrolled energy or impulsivity — may be left with a sense of shame afterward. But there are treatments that can help control these episodes, just like treatment can help control any number of other health problems.

The key is to not be ashamed or embarrassed and to reach out for help.
